Paddock Surfaces

There are various options for creating a paddock surface using plastic Terra-Grids. Read on for a clear explanation:

  • Light
  • Heavy
  • Plus

Lightweight Terra-Grids

Plastic Terra-Grids are ideal for creating a dry paddock surface.

A paddock built with plastic Terra-Grids from Nedlandic ensures a dry ground. By installing Terra-Grids , horses no longer stand on wet, muddy surfaces. Horses that are continuously exposed to moist ground have a higher risk of hoof diseases such as mud fever.

Construction of Lightweight Paddock Surfaces

This type of paddock surface is ideal for turnouts and paddocks that are not accessed by heavy machinery.

Material Calculation

Gravel = 0,05 m³ or 0,07 t per m²
Sand= 0,07m³ or 0,1 t per m² ( paddock)
Sand= 0,13m³ or 0,195 t per m² (Riding arena)

Example Calculation for 160m²

Gravel = 160m² x 0,07 t = 11,2 t
Sand = 160m² x 0,1 t = 16 t (paddock)
Sand = 160m² x 0,195 t =31,20 t (Riding arena)

The recommended constructions and calculations are examples and may vary in practice.

Heavy-Duty Terra-Grids

Plastic Terra-Grids are ideal for creating a dry paddock surface. Even a riding arena that also serves as a paddock can be built this way. When a paddock surface is constructed as shown below, no additional drainage is required. The gravel layer functions as a drainage layer—excess water is directed through it, and it also serves as a buffer for water absorption during heavy rain.

When a riding arena is constructed using this method, it can also withstand traffic from heavy vehicles. Another advantage is that horses are unable to dig into the paddocks. The top layer remains level, and typically, 8 to 10 centimeters of sand are used. If the sand becomes soiled over time, it can be easily replaced.

Material Calculation

Crushed Stone / Coarse Gravel =0,25 m³ or 0,358 t per m²
Gravel = 0,05 m³ or 0,07 t per m²
Sand = 0,07 m³ or 0,1 t per m² (Paddock)
Sand = 0,13 m³ or 0,195 t per m² (Riding arena)

Example Calculation for 160m²

Coarse Gravel= 160m² x 0,358 t = 57,28 t
Gravel = 160m² x 0,07 t = 11,2 t
Sand = 160m² x 0,1 t = 16 t (paddock)
Sand = 160m² x 0,195 t =31,20 t (Riding arena)

The construction guidelines and calculations are examples.
Actual requirements may vary depending on local conditions.

Terra-Grid plus

With our new product, Terra-Grid plus, paddock surfaces can be installed with minimal groundwork.

Terra-Grid Plus can be laid directly on an existing ground layer, provided it is sufficiently load-bearing. This allows you to create a beautiful, dry paddock surface quickly and easily.
